Training Tool Policy

At Lotus Dog Training, I use reward-based, force-free training methods and do not use or permit aversive training tools, including:

  • E-collars / shock collars

  • Prong / pinch collars

  • Choke chains or slip collars used for corrections

  • Leash corrections, jerking, or other equipment intended to cause pain or discomfort

  • Other tools or techniques that rely on fear, intimidation, or physical punishment

Why?
This policy is based on current veterinary behavior recommendations and research. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) recommends reward-based training for all dogs and specifically advises against e-collars, prong collars, choke chains, and other aversive methods. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) likewise recommends against aversive techniques, citing potential negative effects on welfare, behavior, problem-solving, and the human-animal bond.

Instead, I focus on teaching dogs what to do, using reinforcement, management, appropriate equipment, and behavior modification to help dogs feel safe, confident, and successful. If your dog currently uses an aversive tool, I am happy to help you transition to an appropriate, humane alternative that fits your dog's individual needs.
